History of Ackerly, Texas

Ackerly, Texas is a small town located in Dawson County in West Texas. The community was established in 1905 by two brothers, William and Edward Ackerly. They were the sons of a wealthy rancher from Colorado and had an interest in creating their own settlement.

The brothers began by purchasing land from local settlers for their new town. They named the settlement after their family name and began to build it up. The first building was a small store that sold general merchandise and groceries, as well as providing services such as post office, telegraph office, and stagecoach stop. The store was open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which made it popular with local residents who could purchase supplies at any time of the day or night.

The town grew quickly after its founding and soon had its own post office, schoolhouse, churches, banks, stores and other businesses. By 1910 the population had grown to more than 200 people. In 1915 Ackerly incorporated into a city with its own mayor and city council.

Ackerly continued to grow throughout the 1920s and 1930s thanks to the discovery of oil in nearby areas such as Big Lake. This brought an influx of new residents to the area looking for employment opportunities or hoping to strike it rich by drilling for oil on their own private plots of land. The population reached nearly 1,000 people by 1940.

The 1950s saw further growth for Ackerly as new businesses opened up including grocery stores and restaurants that catered to both locals and visitors alike. The town also gained notoriety when it became home to some of country music’s biggest stars such as Willie Nelson who often performed at local venues like “The Bluebonnet Club” in nearby Big Lake during this time period.

Today, Ackerly is still home to around 600 people who are proud of their small-town atmosphere where everyone knows each other’s names and looks out for one another’s wellbeing. It remains an important part of West Texas history with its roots firmly planted in ranching culture while still growing with modern amenities such as internet access, cable television service and cellular phone coverage that have been added over the years allowing residents to stay connected with the rest of the world while still maintaining a strong sense of community spirit within Ackerly’s.
